Job Summary: | Obtain clinical samples from patients. Route samples to the appropriate testing area. Enter lab test orders into hospital information systems. |
Job Duties/Responsibilities: | |
• | Performs venipuncture, capillary, and related procedures, according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, on patients ranging in age from newborns to geriatrics |
• | Performs venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently using aseptic technique |
• | Follows established policy and procedures to collect Blood Cultures that minimize contamination |
• | Properly labels all specimens, immediately after collection, at all times |
• | Correctly distributes specimens to their respective areas for processing, testing, referral, or storage |
• | Works within the Laboratory Information System to order tests, print labels, and generate completed reports |
• | Performs Point-Of-Care Testing, as necessary |
• | Follows established policy and procedures for safety and uses personal protective equipment correctly |
• | Maintains the phlebotomy area, carts, and trays in a clean, well-stocked manner. |
• | Interacts with co-workers, hospital staff, and medical staff in a courteous, professional manner |
• | Performs other duties as assigned |

• | Uses AIDET or other hospital-approved philosophy to positively interact with patients and visitors |
• | Positively identifies outpatients by checking two patient identifiers and provider order |
• | Positively identifies inpatients by checking two patient identifiers with the patient's wristband |
• | Washes hands, or uses hand sanitizer, before and after each patient contact |
• | Disposes used needles in appropriate containers after use. Does not recap needles |
• | Prioritizes work to achieve maximum efficiency and can adjust schedule to account for STAT's, and other priorities |
• | Has a working knowledge on specimen requirements; tube types and minimum volumes |
• | Observes Standard Precautions when collecting or handling patient specimens |
